The more we deviate from the Founders' principles, the less we can expect the greatness of our nation to endure. Republicans work to conserve the work of our Founders — though a famous Republican rightly overturned slavery.
Leaving Independence Hall at the end of the Constitutional Convention, Benjamin Franklin was reportedly asked, "Well, doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?" He replied, "A republic if you can keep it." Republicans want it kept and kept well. That's conservative.
